Essential Business Tax Deadlines for October 2025

As the crisp air of October arrives, it ushers in critical business tax deadlines. From corporate filings to retirement contributions, staying informed about these dates is crucial to maintain compliance and avoid costly penalties. Here's a detailed look into the key tax deadlines this October.

October 15 - Corporate Filings

For corporations operating on a calendar year, October 15 is the deadline to file your 2024 income tax return (Form 1120) if you secured an automatic 6-month extension back in April. Additionally, this date marks the due time for any unsettled tax, interest, or penalties.

October 15 - Payroll Tax Deposits

Employers adhering to the monthly deposit rules must mark October 15 to deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for September 2025. Similarly, if nonpayroll withholding applies, this is the deadline for those deposits as well.

October 15 - Retirement Plans

Self-employed individuals who extended their 2023 tax return filing have until October 15, 2025, to establish a Keogh Retirement Account for 2024. This is also the final day to contribute to a SEP or Keogh plan for the year.

October 31 - Quarterly Reporting

Before month-end, October 31 demands attention as the deadline to file Form 941 for Q3 2025. Given the accuracy of deposit rules, ensure all taxes are deposited or paid unless your tax liability is under $2,500, allowing full payment with a timely filed return. Any tax deposited timely gives you an extension to file until November 10.

October 31 - Small Employers

Certain smaller employers need to deposit any undeposited taxes by the 31st if their total liability is $2,500 or more for 2025 but was below this amount for Q3.

October 31 - Federal Unemployment Tax

If your outstanding Federal Unemployment Tax exceeds $500 as of September, deposits are due by the end of October.

Adjustments for Weekends & Holidays

Should any due date land on a weekend or legal holiday, it'll move to the next business day that's not a holiday itself.

Disaster Area Considerations

In the event your business is situated in a federally designated disaster area, deadline extensions might apply. For updated disaster designations and extended filing dates, consult with FEMA at FEMA Disaster Declarations and the IRS at IRS Tax Relief.
