Key October 2025 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

As October ushers in cooler temperatures, it also brings crucial tax deadlines that demand the attention of diligent taxpayers. For those who obtained a six-month extension to file last year, October 15 marks the final opportunity to submit your 2024 Form 1040 and address any outstanding taxes. Ignoring this deadline may result in penalties, so mark your calendar and prepare accordingly.

October 10 - Report Tips to Employers

If your employment involves earning tips and you amassed over $20 in tips during the month of September, it's mandatory to report these to your employer via IRS Form 4070 by October 10. Employers are responsible for withholding FICA and income tax from your regular earnings. In scenarios where standard wages don't cover the necessary withholding, the shortfall will appear in box 8 of your W-2. To avoid unexpected liabilities, settle any outstanding withholding during your annual tax filing.

October 15 - Foreign Financial Account Reporting

For individuals with foreign financial interests who received an extension, October 15 is the deadline for submitting Form FinCEN 114. Compliance is critical to avoid penalties associated with non-disclosure.

October 15 - Individual Tax Return Filers

Those who filed for an automatic six-month extension to complete their 2024 individual tax returns are reminded to file Form 1040 and remit any due taxes, interest, and penalties by October 15. Missing this deadline could lead to severe financial consequences.

Weekends & Holidays

It’s important to note: if a tax due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day.

Disaster Area Extensions

For those impacted by declared disasters, relief is available. Tax deadlines may be extended in designated disaster areas. To confirm if your area qualifies, refer to FEMA’s disaster declarations or the IRS’s tax relief notices for accurate and timely updates:
